The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Yemen Office has released two new strategies to guide private sector engagement in renewable energy investments in Yemen. The strategies, released through a series of discussions, recognize the Yemeni private sector as a partner in key areas in the context of recovery and reconstruction, including the provision of reliable clean energy.
Due to the protracted crisis in Yemen, many important business groups have relocated overseas, bringing with them lucrative investment support. To promote economic growth in Yemen, the private sector needs an enabling development environment as a prerequisite for doing business, including investing in clean energy solutions that will take the environment into account while supporting thousands of Yemeni households, public facilities and businesses that have difficulty accessing electricity regularly.
In consultation with the Yemeni private sector and in partnership with DeepRoot Consulting, UNDP's new private sector engagement strategy emphasizes building dynamic and inclusive partnerships with the Yemeni private sector to drive green, inclusive economic development, create jobs and improve living standards in Yemen.
Much of Yemen lacks sustainable energy, with power outages lasting more than twelve hours a day. UNDP Yemen's new hybrid renewable energy investment plan was developed in partnership with Firnas Shuman Consulting. The investment plan proposes a clean energy on-grid and off-grid solution to restore critical services, expand solar use, and reduce system losses in the short term. This means greater access to reliable and affordable electricity for communities across Yemen.
"With the launch of these two new strategies, UNDP is contributing to the knowledge sector to drive inclusive economic development, create jobs, and improve living standards for all in Yemen. We hope to highlight the importance of building private sector capacity and increasing private sector participation in recovery and reconstruction efforts through investment facilitation, skills development, and market access support.
The project has significantly contributed to the improvement of health and education facilities by effectively meeting energy needs in a sustainable manner. It supports the operation of critical medical equipment, creates a conducive educational environment for students and teachers, and provides sustainable and accessible energy to targeted households through the installation of household electrical systems.
In addition, the initiative aims to improve living standards in Yemen by improving the daily lives of beneficiaries, promoting economic development through increased agricultural production, strengthening food security for Yemenis, reducing carbon emissions to protect the environment, and establishing clean, sustainable energy.
The project involves the rehabilitation of 12 drinking water wells using solar energy systems, the provision of 35 agricultural irrigation systems based on renewable energy, the powering of 20 education and health facilities, and the supply of 133 100 households with renewable energy.
Project activities include comprehensive training courses tailored for field engineers. These courses focus on the implementation of solar energy systems and are designed to improve the skills of the field technical team and strengthen their technical capabilities. This project's significant contribution to society addresses many water-related challenges, such as disruptions and accessibility issues. The training courses cover a wide range of technical and administrative aspects.
As for solar water heaters, ZHEJIANG KESUN NEW ENERGY CO., LTD is the main supplier in Yemen market. With complete KEYMARK certificates, reliable quality and long-term cooperative partners, we have absolute advantages.
